Bush Cemetery
The "Meatworks" site in Old Noarlunga is a degraded. polluted site , which for far too long has been left without refurbishment. Past practices and attitudes have seen the site left as it is today , an eyesore adjacent to one of the most beautiful townships in South Australia.
The proposed new development of Hackham SE will generate profits for the Land Management Corporation which should be used to purchase and refurbish this polluted site.
A buffer zone is required to protect the Old Noarlunga township and the adjacent Onkaparinga River National Park from the new development. A Natural Bush Cemetery has been suggested to not only provide the buffer but to supply a much needed cemetery of that nature . The land size available would only be restricted by the commitment and amount purchased/supplied by the Land Management Corporation , a South Australian Government agency.
"The great thing about natural burial grounds is that they provide a positive contribution to the environment. They are easy to maintain. They are inexpensive to implement, because the person is buried , and a tree is planted above or alongside the remains. There is a little plaque next to the tree or at the entrance of the natural burial ground, saying that a particular tree represents the place where a particular person was buried or their cremated remains have been placed."
In recent times a locality search has been unsuccessful , due to centralisation and suitability problems. A more perfect site would be hard to find, being central to the southern suburbs , along side an historic church and gravesite , overlooking the local national park. It would seem to be ideal and provide the buffer zone that Old Noarlunga needs to maintain the town's ambience and historic nature..
